Updated: Apr 17

February has always been synonymous with romance, and what better time than this month of love to explore some of the most iconic love songs in music history? Love songs, with their heartfelt melodies and timeless lyrics, have left an indelible mark on our collective memory, transcending generations and emotions. Here are three of the most legendary love songs and the captivating stories behind them:

"Unchained Melody" – The Righteous Brothers (1965)

Originally composed by Alex North and Hy Zaret for the 1955 film Unchained, this track found worldwide fame when The Righteous Brothers recorded their soulful rendition in 1965. With Bill Medley’s deep baritone and Bobby Hatfield’s soaring falsetto, it became a powerful anthem of longing and devotion.

Its iconic status was cemented years later during the unforgettable pottery scene in Ghost (1990) with Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore. That moment forever intertwined the song with romance and nostalgia.

"Something" – The Beatles (1969)

George Harrison’s Something remains one of the most beautiful love songs ever written. Featured on Abbey Road, it highlighted Harrison’s often underrated songwriting talent. Even Frank Sinatra called it "the greatest love song of the last 50 years."

While Harrison was modest about its inspiration, it's believed to be about his then-wife, Pattie Boyd. Boyd herself once said the song perfectly captured George’s love and vulnerability. Its heartfelt sincerity continues to resonate with listeners around the world.

"Je T’aime… Moi Non Plus" – Serge Gainsbourg & Jane Birkin (1969)

If there’s a song that embodies both the passion and controversy of love, it’s Serge Gainsbourg’s Je T’aime… Moi Non Plus (I Love You... Me Neither). Originally written for Brigitte Bardot, it was later recorded with Jane Birkin, Gainsbourg’s partner at the time.

With Birkin’s breathy vocals and Gainsbourg’s sultry tone, the song caused a stir upon release, facing bans in several countries due to its provocative nature. Ironically, the controversy only added to its mystique, turning it into a symbol of raw, unfiltered love.

These songs aren’t just about love; they capture the complex emotions that come with it — from longing and vulnerability to passion and defiance. So this February, whether you're falling in love, cherishing a lifelong bond, or simply enjoying great music, let these timeless tracks be your soundtrack. 🎶❤️

LOVE, BREAKUPS AND MUSIC

February isn’t just for love songs — it's also the perfect time to dive back into Rumours, Fleetwood Mac's legendary album born from both passion and heartbreak. Released in 1977, this masterpiece is proof that personal struggles can be transformed into timeless art.

The drama behind Rumours is as compelling as the music itself. The band members’ lives were a tangled mess of love, breakups, and emotional chaos. Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, once deeply in love, saw their relationship unravel during the making of the album. Despite the heartache, they kept working together, pouring their pain into the songs, which gave them an unmistakable intensity.

Meanwhile, keyboardist Christine McVie and bassist John McVie were divorcing after eight years of marriage. As if that wasn’t enough, Christine began dating one of the band’s lighting technicians. And then there was drummer Mick Fleetwood, who was dealing with his wife’s infidelity. Simply put, everyone in the band was going through something.

This emotionally charged atmosphere turned Rumours into a breakup diary of sorts, with each track telling a deeply personal story:

  • "Go Your Own Way": Written by Lindsey Buckingham, this track captures his frustration and anger toward Stevie Nicks after their breakup. Its lyrics serve as an open message to her, filled with raw emotion.

  • "Dreams": In contrast, Stevie Nicks’ iconic contribution reflects a more accepting and introspective perspective on their separation. Fun fact: Stevie wrote this timeless hit in just 10 minutes while sitting alone in a studio room.

  • "Don’t Stop": Christine McVie’s optimistic anthem sends a message to John McVie, encouraging him to look forward to the future despite their split.

  • "The Chain": Perhaps the most powerful song on the album, "The Chain" is the only track credited to all the band members. It’s a declaration of resilience, symbolizing how, despite their personal conflicts, the music kept them united.

Amid the chaos and emotional exhaustion, Rumours became a monumental success. The album sold over 40 million copies worldwide and earned Fleetwood Mac a Grammy for Album of the Year in 1978. It’s consistently ranked among the greatest albums of all time, including a high spot on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list.

Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours is more than just an album; it’s a testament to how heartbreak and conflict can fuel creativity. It serves as a reminder that, even amidst chaos, creativity can thrive.
