As a Second Life resident and live music host/manager, how do you describe yourself, and where does your interest in music come from?
I’m a very outgoing and friendly person. I’m a very “let’s get things done” kind of person. I am an extrovert so being around people energizes me. Music has always been part of my life. Growing up there was always music playing at my house and my Dad has a beautiful singing voice. Music is a part of expressing all kinds of emotions and it touches my soul.
How long have you been a host/manager in Second Life? What drew you to this project?
I’ve owned and managed Love Kats for 15 years (16 years in August). I enjoy music and was blown away by all the talented musicians in Second Life. I wanted to create a place where people could come together and enjoy the music and Second Life community. I saw an opportunity to do this by opening a venue and hosting live music there.
What do you do in real life, and how do you relate to music outside of Second Life?
I’m a business owner in real life. Just as in my growing up years, there is always music playing in my house, car, office- either in the background or loud - depending on the situation! I attend real-life concerts, and Second Life Music Jams- which are real-life gatherings of SL musicians and fans. If you’ve never attended one it’s a must- it is so great to meet the people you spend time with in Second Life in real-life.
How do you usually spend your time as a Second Life resident? Any projects?
I have a small circle of close friends I enjoy spending time with when I am not at the venue. I am also very passionate about raising funds for charity. I work closely with Jenny Anatine on several annual events to raise money for research leading to cures for cancer. We just completed a big event for Strides and raised a substantial amount for breast cancer research and assistance for those with breast cancer through the American Cancer Society. Our next big event will take place in April/May for Relay for Life.
What are the positives and negatives of hosting live music events?
Hosting live music events is a lot of work. There is scheduling, advertising, preparing the venue and so it can take a lot of time some days. Sometimes performers have to cancel last minute and finding replacements can take time. Also, you have to take care of conflicts that may arise with those attending shows and try to resolve these so that everyone enjoys themselves. All of this is to say it’s a great experience to have people come to a show and really enjoy the variety of music that Second Life musicians bring in- world. It’s also a lot of fun to socialize.
Anything you would like to add?
Thanks so much for bringing this perspective to the Second Life community. I’d love to see more musicians and more venues and hopefully, your interviews will inspire others to think about it.
