Music has always been an integral part of Marqs DeSade's life. He has been playing instruments since the age of 11, and his passion for music extends beyond the physical world into the virtual realm.
Marqs began his journey in the Second Life (SL) music scene with a sense of exploration. Intrigued by the creative possibilities and vibrant community, he started attending live performances. Encouraged by friends and motivated by a desire for self-expression, Marqs decided to share his own music. With their support, he learned to stream and performed his first full set in an SL show on January 1, 2014.
His musical style is a diverse blend, featuring a playlist of nearly 600 songs. It includes classic rock icons like Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR), The Beatles, and Elton John, as well as contemporary artists such as Bruno Mars, The Script, Dave Matthews Band, and Imagine Dragons. As a songwriter, Marqs often incorporates his original compositions into his shows. One of his most requested songs, "Picket Fences," has also been covered by fellow SL performers Ed Lowell and Mr. MultiWriter.
Marqs’ appreciation for music is rooted in his family background. He grew up listening to a wide range of genres—from big band to southern rock to country—thanks to his mother's eclectic taste. This rich musical exposure has profoundly influenced his journey as both a listener and a creator.
For aspiring SL musicians, Marqs shares some valuable advice: immerse yourself in the SL music scene by attending live shows, befriend established performers for guidance, and participate in open mic nights to gain experience and refine your sound. Recording your performances can also help you identify areas for improvement. Above all, treat everyone with respect—fellow performers, venue owners, and your audience. Be reliable, prepared, and strive to deliver your best performance every time.
Beyond music, Marqs enjoys scripting in SL, but his latest creative pursuit is photography. He explores captivating locations in SL, using photography to tell stories and convey philosophical themes. His work has been showcased in several SL exhibitions, providing him with a fulfilling outlet for creative expression.
